"Daring Darlings" by Sharon K. Hunt
She Gave It Her Best Shot by Bernard Price0
I'm just an old cowgirl Who's now past her best, Raised a great family On a ranch way out west.
Taught them to ride The day they could walk, Were goin' to be cowboys To hear them all talk.
Now that they're grown up Lookin' after the place, If they're caught slackin' I get on their case.
It takes lots of work. Of that there's no doubt. Hard times and problems, I know all about.
My old man took off A long time ago, But I kept on goin' And runnin' the show . Now in my rocker, Grandkids come from the barn, So happy to visit And hear a good yarn.
I tell them of bygone days And things I have seen, Recalling some good times And places I've been.
They listen, full of wonder, As I spin my tale. To capture their attention Somehow I never fail.
Then with a kiss goodbye, They're off to play once more, Around this ranch they love, All part of the western lore.
When my life is over And laid down in my plot, Write upon my tombstone, "She gave it her best shot."
